PANS and PANDAS are autoimmune immune induced inflammatory conditions that results when an infection or some other invasive trigger spurs the body to turn on itself and attack structures in the brain resulting in sudden or subacute neuro-psychiatric changes such as the sudden onset of severe obsessive compulsive disorder, motor tics, anxiety, eating restrictions , behavioral regression and Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS), Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated w/ Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS), or Sydenham's chorea (with psychiatric symptoms) present a sudden, seemingly inexplicable change in children, and we understand that getting accurate diagnosis, proper treatment and family support can make a profound difference for both the Traditionally, PANS/PANDAS is treated with a combination of medication, CBT, and Exposure therapy. However, I have found there is often a history of trauma associated with the initial onset of symptoms. A child can be incorrectly diagnosed and in turn end up with a series of negative experiences with physicians and medications. By definition, PANS/PANDAS affects children. While it may be diagnosed in children between the ages of 3 and 12, the average age of onset is between 7 and 8 years old. It is most common in children between Kindergarten and second grade. PANS/PANDAS seems to affect all socio-demographic groups equally.
